The Camels’ Carol
In the Gospel of St. Matthew, we learn of the wise men who come from the East following a Star, and so we can imagine the Camels who carried them all that way to Bethlehem. Here, the Camels tell their own story: ‘There were three of us Camels and three wise kings. It was such a long journey across the desert, nothing but sand and rock, except the Star above – Then suddenly the Star stopped beyond a hill and we stood beneath it. We knew the place, we had seen it in a dream. Then we saw the manger with the Baby inside, and we knelt down touching our heads upon the ground. We gave him our gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh – just as we did in our dream.
